Au Gratin Potatoes

Yields: 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups basic white sauce
  • 1½ cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled, melted (cooked?), and cut into ¼ inch slices
  • ½ cup soft bread crumbs
  • 2 Tbsp margarine, melted (or butter)
  • Onion slices (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, prepare a double recipe of the white sauce.
  2. Stir in cheese, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir until cheese is melted.
  3. Gently stir in potatoes until coated.
  4. Transfer to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  5. Toss bread crumbs and melted margarine together.
  6. Sprinkle over potatoes. (Optional: Add thin onion slices before bread crumbs).
  7. Cover and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
  8. Uncover and bake 10 minutes longer or until the topping is golden brown.
